The Bluebird arrived in Dumbleyung on the eve of the 50th celebrations of Donald Campbell’s World Water Speed achievement in 1964. A huge celebratory event was held with many people, even some of Donald Campbell’s original team members from Barmara in South Australia, where Donald Campbell attempted the record earlier, returning to the town.

The largest open lake in Western Australia’s southwest at 13km in length, 6.5km wide and may very well be the reason the “Dumbleyung” town name exists - thought to be derived from the Aboriginal word ‘Dambeling’ meaning large lake or sea. For the first time in decades the lake is filling, with skiing, boating, paddle boarding and kayaking already becoming popular attractions.

Discover Donald Campbell’s journey, incredible challenges and triumph of accomplishing two world speed records in one year. On December 31st 1964, after recently breaking the world land speed record in Lake Eyre, South Australia, Campbell, broke the world water speed record on Lake Dumbleyung in his jet propelled hydroplane boat, Bluebird. With only hours to spare, Campbell famously achieved two world speed records in one year – a feat that has never been achieved before or since. Emu Essence

The Emu Farm is located 11km from Kukerin on Kukerin South Road with Farm tours and emu egg collecting available on request. Visitors are able to view, walk with and feed the emus in their enclosed but natural bush setting as well as tour the incubator and hatcher and collect emu eggs in season. This is a unique experience that can be enjoyed by people of all ages with the opportunity to take photos and enjoy the natural surroundings. Emu products including emu oil, cosmetics, soap and carved and non-carved eggs are available to purchase. Farm tours are run all year round by appointment.

For a bit of lunch tucker you can’t fly past takeaways from Dumbleyung Roadhouse with some yummy home-made pies, pizza or chips. Then “Along Came Henry” the CAFÉ at our Community Resource Centre, open weekdays where you can perch, relax, enjoy a coffee and something a little fancy to eat for breakfast and lunch. For a unique dining experience, explore Cambinata Yabbies with steamed yabbies, dipping sauces, salad, home made bread, olive oils and dukkahs. Prefer to cook your own Barbie (BBQ)? Visit the Kukerin General Store or the Dumbleyung General Store for all your grocery pickings. Not hungry anymore but want to try them all, just nest for the night and continue eating your way through the shire tomorrow!
